>> from new york city, this is "night line" with dan abram. >> good evening and thanks for joining us. from the moment the first reports broke, it had all the markings of a horrifying attack. at least one gunman, maybe more. a shooting at the oldest naval facility in the country. and only a few miles from the white house and capital building. panic ensued as the death toll mounted. we have coverage of the deadly rampage. >> reporter: in a flash, a dreary monday morning turns to chaos. swat teams running through the neighborhood, fully armed.

helicopters shifted over america's shipbuilders in washington d.c. as bullets target those just reporting for another day at work. >> we have a report on the fourth floor, a male with a shotgun, multiple shots fired, multiple people down. we're still waiting for more information at the scene. >> everyone said this is no drill. go go go, emergency exits now. >> dc metro police get their first call at 8:20 a.m. by then a security guard on the first floor of the command center, building 197, is hit. >> we have an active shooter on the fourth floor. >> and the gunman is on the upper floors apparently shooting down from atrium walk ways, blasting away at the food courtyard below. >> i heard three gunshots.

pow pow pow, straight in a row. >> shots that triggered a full scale panic and an all out rush for the exit in a building where 3,000 military and civilian personal work. >> we saw the security guard. she told us to run to shelter and keep running. >> todd and terry were both on the third floor trying to escape the mayhem when they stepped directly into the gunman's sight. >> as we were exiting, we noticed him down the hall. we heard shots. he aimed his gun at us and fired at least two or three shots. we ran down the stairs. >> we could see him with the rifle and he raised and aimed at us and hit high on the wall as we were trying to leave. >> what was going through your mind? >> get everyone out of the building right now. >> by 9:33, the first ambulances rushed victims to hospitals. and some are scooped off the roof, bravely air lifted to

safety by circling helicopters. >> we have an officer down, building 197 on the third floor. >> this ambulance with a police escort carried a d.c. patrolman who shot it out with the gunman. at 9:45, the faa stops all flights in and out of reagan national airport. and back at the building, emts struggled to safely remove the injured. >> at least five people shot. >> later the police realized the toll was much higher. a dozen innocent dead and at least eight wounded. authorities confirmed that none of the victims are in the military. all are navy contractors, one of them standing shoulder to shoulder with this man when he was shot. finally at 12:14, police announced they have fatally shot the gunman. but until tonight feared there might be others involved. >> a big concern for us right

now is that we potentially have two other shooters that we have not located at this point. >> the navy yard stayed on lock down for more than six hours. survivors told to hide in place, some barricading themselves in top secret secure closets. others under their desks. >> we put chairs and then tables up against those. >> we heard gunfire and we looked up and there were two bullet holes in the top of the wall in the conference room. >> seven hours after the first shots were fired at 3:15, the nearby capital building was locked down and the nationals called off their night major league national baseball game as rumors swirled of multiple gunman, at 4:24, the dead suspect's name is finally released. >> no piece of information is too small. we are looking to learn everything we can about recent movements, contacts and associates. we ask anyone with information about him to contact us at

1-800-call-fbi. >> it was not until 10:19 p.m. that police felt confident that alexis acted alone. >> we do now feel comfortable that we have the single and sole person responsible for the loss of life inside of the base today. >> military records show alexis was in the navy from may of 2007 to january of 2011, serving at a naval air station in fort worth, texas. sources say he last worked as a civilian it contractor for the navy and had a valid security clearance. he was described as a steely eyed killer randomly gunning down whoever was in front of him until he was shot and killed by police. that those stories collide with the people who called him a friend. >> he had a gun but that doesn't mean he is going to shoot

people. >> this is so night and day. it's not even in his character. >> but alexis had a history of disturbing behavior and brushes with the law. he was arrested in september 2010 in fort worth accused of recklessly discharging a firearm into a neighbor's apartment. and in may 2004 he admitted to shooting out tires in an anger fuelled blackout. his father said he experienced anger management problems that the family believed was associated with ptsd. he was an active participant in rescue attempts of september 11. >> since we don't know much about motive, how can they say there was no terrorism involved? >> they do know enough about

him. he strikes me as a guy who has been going downhill for a number of months if not years. he in his own mind is convinced that the only way to empower himself is to attack those he believes have wronged him. >> this is the fourth mass shooting this year with more than five people killed and the 19th since president obama took office in 2009. the president who while marking the five year anniversary of if financial crisis opened his remarks with some all too familiar words. >> today they faced unimaginable violence that they wouldn't have expected here at home. we will do everything in our power to be sure that whoever carried out this act is held responsible. we send thoughts and prayers to all at the navy yard who had been touched by this tragedy. >> sources tell abc news that the hard evidence points to only one shooter and late into the

>> colorado seeing what may be one of the worst floods in history. the eroded roads and collapsing bridges mean there is no way to find or reunite with loved ones. but today, finally, some relief. abc's ginger lee is there for coverage of the colorado floods. >> reporter: it's a race against time as one by one the stranded are brought to safety. >> we're 160 people rescued since this morning at this airport and 100 pets. >> from the air we saw and heard the stories of survival. those trapped for days now by those devastating floods that destroyed 1500 homes and left

hundreds still unaccounted for are doing whatever it takes to make it out alive. >> we were in the house and it's cold up there. >> robin and her daughter were trapped in their home in pinewood springs and had not heard from hers husband for days when suddenly -- >> she screamed and said dad's here. it was the most beautiful thing in the world. >> check this out. >> reporter: i have been here from the beginning, but today as the rains finally began to trail off, i got to see the relief operation spring into full action. search and rescue teams spread out this morning heading up a canyon in west boulder. door to door searching for any sign of life. >> our basic goal is to check in with these residents and make sure that the house is empty and the residents has evacuated. >> not everyone is in trouble. >> we have pooled our food

resources. we're fine, we just can't get down anywhere. >> but for others in colorado the tales are terrifying. >> we basically had a water way through our house. >> they were a house on a hillside. >> we were worried that it was going to take the mud from under and make the house where it was unlivable. >> when you live on the side of a mountain, you forget you could slide down. >> today they were finally rescued after six days. >> the helicopter ride was very fun. you have to have ear plugs on it because it's so loud. >> this search and rescue team from nebraska trekked high above boulder trying to make sure everyone was accounted for. >> we have never ever seen eight days of continuous rain like we had. >> reporter: george moved into this house on labor day. 53 years ago. >> we're not leaving.

we're going to die here. >> reporter: the footprint of the destruction stretches across 17 counties, an area twice the size of rhode island, buried mud and ruin. >> we were all yelling to get away from the window when it exploded in. >> reporter: today, colorado residents are starting the tough task of cleaning up. >> it was just too water falls flowing into the house. >> how can we ever recover from this? and i know exactly inch by inch, mile by mile, community by community they are taking a step back. >> reporter: over the weekend, the colorado national guard rescued 85 fifth graders and some adults who had been trapped. >> the trails were turning into rivers. >> the road to their camp site washed away isolating the group from any help. >> they said we have enough

food, we have enough water and we are okay. but what they really meant is we are stranded on a mountain with no way of getting out. >> for days, frantic parents waited desperately. >> there was not a lot of information coming out, which was the hardest part. >> reporter: but the rescues did lead to emotional reunions like this one when bonny's daughter finally came home. >> it was our bus. sorry. and when she came off on the fourth bus i had never been so happy. >> went through there. horrifying pictures of the devastation. homes completely surrounded by floodwater. farms and livestock swallowed. and look at this time lapse. you can see the south platte rivering devouring this

farmland. in boulder, this office building split in half by a mud slide. >> they told us to leave and we actually took a couple hours to grab what we could and we never thought it was going to be this bad. >> reporter: in nearby longmont, families got to go home saturday only to be told to leave late sunday as the waters threatened again. >> reporter: that was a window? >> yeah. the windows broke. >> reporter: the rodgers family covered in mud were cleaning up from the first flood when they were asked to evacuate for the second time in less than a week. >> reporter: and now they told you again you got to get out? >> yeah. it is just devastating. >> reporter: we are also learning more about those who died. these two were on their way to a birthday party with friends when they were caught in a mud slide near boulder. from only a few feet above the flooding, images show how the
